January is a great time to re-evaluate the talent in your team, and to make sure you’re getting the best contribution possible from your team members.
Here are five things to consider that will help you assess the health of your team –
- New Team Members. Have any new team members joined you since the last time you reviewed your team’s strengths? Who could benefit from a meeting to talk through their strengths so that you understand their ambitions and capabilities better?
- Development Grid. Is your nine-box Potential-Performance grid up to date? Has anyone moved around the grid in the last six months who needs to be placed in a new position? Does this affect how you need to support their development? What are you currently doing with your high potentials? When was the last time you gave your High Performers recognition?
- Succession Planning. Is your succession plan current? Is there anyone in your team who is likely to move on in the next 12 months? Are you ready for that to happen? In particular, have you got any experts who might move on and leave a gap in your team? Do you still have a successor for yourself? January is always a time when new roles, secondments and projects are dreamed up – make sure you and your team are ready.
- Strengths and Weaknesses. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of your team as a whole. Are there any team weaknesses that may be detracting from your team’s reputation? Is there a particular issue that you want to work on for your team as a whole this year? Do you have a development plan in place for each of your team members?
- Your Development. What have you done recently to push your own development forward? For example, when was the last time you asked for 360-degree feedback and gained some insight into what others think of you? Could you use your strengths to get some feedback quickly to help move yourself forward?
