The art of appreciation
How often do you take the time to spot people doing things right rather than doing things wrong? How often do you follow up by giving them an appreciative comment?
Making a conscious effort to celebrate success is a great way to be seen as a positive force in your organisation, and in life in general. If you take the time to comment on things which people do well – and explain why you’re so impressed by it – you’ll quickly find that you build a great reputation amongst your peers. If you want to really stand out, take the time to give thoughtful feedback about specifics. While “That was great!” is nice to receive, “That was great – I really understand now exactly why the company needs to do that – and I particularly liked the story about the rain shower, I’ll remember that one” shows that you are thoughtful, and that you really paid attention.
So whether it’s a colleague who wrote a great report, a senior manager who inspired you with their presentation, or a waitress delivering fantastic service in a restaurant, make a point of showing your appreciation!
