We are about to enter the final quarter of the calendar year – but it’s not too late to make the most of your career in 2014. For most people there are still 3-6 months to go in the current financial and appraisal year. There is still time to develop and take action to achieve your career goals!
Picking up from some of the themes earlier in the year, here are some quick questions to help you get you refocused on your career:
- Have you got a mentor set up, and are you meeting them regularly? Mentors can help in a range of ways – to be a sounding board for your thinking about your career, or to develop skills, or just to kick butt so that you take career action! Remember – asking someone to ‘be my mentor’ is like proposing marriage – a big commitment! You’ll do better to pick someone and ask them for an hour a month for 3 months, to tackle a specific issue.
- Can you extend your network by being someone else’s mentor?
- Is your volunteering on track? Christmas parties are coming up – organising one is a great way to get to know a wide range of people and raise your profile.
- Has your network changed? Have new people come into your network this year? Do you have more people who could become your mentors and advisers? Is there anyone who could be important to your career in danger of slipping out of your network? Contact someone you haven’t spoken to in ages.
- What have you done to raise your visibility? Is there more you can do? How are you communicating your 2014 achievements to the people you want to influence?
- What new projects or initiatives have you got involved with? Are they on target to enhance your career?
- Are you still capturing data related to your work this year? Measurement is key in being able to communicate the impact you are making.
There is still time to push through and take career action this year. Don’t leave it any longer.
