The right way to connect on LinkedIn
When sending a connection request to someone on LinkedIn, bear in mind they may not recall who you are or where they met you. That means the default “I’d like to add you to my professional network” message LinkedIn suggests you send, could end up being seen as spam and cost you your reputation, or even the chance to connect. This is especially likely with senior people who may not know your name – they will have to take the time to look up your profile to check whether they should connect with you. Are you confident that they will take that time, and accept your invitation?
To help them decide ‘Yes!’, when sending out your requests make sure that you remind the recipient how you know them, and where you met. Say something complimentary that shows why you want to connect, like “I really enjoyed your presentation, and in fact quoted the ‘3 biggest challenges’ to my work group today”. Not only will that make them certain to accept your request, but it will also convey that you really want to connect, that you are a positive person, and that you are considerate of their time. You’ll create a great impression which will make you stand out from the crowd.
Needless to say, if you receive a default invitation, the same applies. Accept the invitation, and then click on ‘Send a message’ to connect in a personal way.
