If you use LinkedIn, chances are you’ve already discovered the “Who’s viewed your profile” widget in the sidebar – it’s one of the most highly clicked and intriguing areas of LinkedIn. And it’s for this reason that it’s also a great way to get on the key people in your organisation’s radar.
Here’s three tips to help you put “Who’s viewed your profile” to work in developing your career:
If you’re due to attend a presentation or meeting with a senior manager or key influencer, view their profile on LinkedIn either before or after it takes place. After the event, and at least a week later (once they’ve had chance to receive the weekly digest from LinkedIn), if you send a connect request it’s more likely to be accepted. Make sure you send a personal message with your request
as covered in another article – mention where you met them and anything memorable (“I was the one who asked the question about…”). And it doesn’t hurt to show appreciation, if you found something they said thought-provoking, or if they gave you any help.
After you’ve had some contact with a key person, view their profile on LinkedIn to leave footprint in their “Who’s viewed your profile” widget. Again you can follow up with a connect request a few days later.
If you know there are job adverts going out which you want to apply for, find out who is recruiting and view their profile a week before applying – and then do the same again for the interviewer a week before attending an interview.
It really is one of LinkedIn’s best features, and you should think about how best to use it to get on and stay on the radar of the people who are important to your career.
Take Away
Show your interest in other people, and make your approach to them personal.
Key point
In your LinkedIn settings (drop down from your name at top right) look under privacy controls, choose “Select what others see when you’ve viewed their profile” and choose the option which shows your identity – otherwise LinkedIn will hide your identity when you view another person’s profile!
